In addition to our musical lineup, this year's Blues, Brews and BBQ will feature Kirk's Famous Smoked BBQ @hendricks.kirk. Kirk and his son fed many happy people at Gospel Sing and we are pleased to welcome them back. Get your BBQ platter on Saturday, September 28 between 12-5pm at historic St. Luke & Odd Fellows Hall!

We are very excited to welcome a new musical group to this year's Blues, Brews & BBQ!

The McFadden and Friends Band was formed in 2018 and consists of five members with many years of experience playing Jazz, Blues and R&B. The band has played at Fatback Soul Shack, Old Salem Brewery, Parkway Brewery, Big Lick Brewery, Twisted Track Brewpub, Mac And Bob’s Restaurant, Joe's Deli, Homeplace, Vineyard Music Festival, Brady's Distillery, Eastern Divide Brewery, and many private events.

If you have been around the area's music scene, you likely know JoJo Stockton. He has graced us with his blues at many Blues, Brews & BBQ events and just recently rocked the Steppin' Out stage with Solacoustix even in a torrential downpour. We are very lucky to welcome his talent again to this year's BBBQ stage.

The JoJo Stockton Project contains a back line: killer drummer Chris Oneal, monster bassist/ lead Nigel Banks, and fire on Keys, Mr. Tom Floyd.

JoJo Stockton (from moonshine capital Franklin County Va.) has opened for several Grammy-nominated artists at venues such as the Harvester Performance Center, The Cove, The Taubman, The Moss Center, 5 Points Sanctuary and the Bower Center. Corey “lil pop” Ledet, “TAZ” Brandon Niederauer , Delbert McClinton, Adrian Crutchfield, Cedrick Burnside, and Rueben Studdard are among the artist he’s performed with or opened for. The list of local artists he’s jammed with is way too long to list.

If you can't find him downtown Roanoke playing the local scene with his popular band “Solacoustix “, or with a blues jam, JoJo is out supporting other local artists (his favorite thing to do). For that reason, he is coined Roanoke's "Mayor of Music" and actually received the key to the city from the Mayor himself in July 2023. Even though he loves all genres, coming up playing blues music with his pops (the late Alvin Stockton) this man is committed to keeping the blues alive!

This year's headliner at Blues, Brews & BBQ is Lady D and Mi$$ion and we are thrilled to welcome her illustrious group back to the stage!

Lady D was born in the coalfields of Cabin Creek in West Virginia and has since become known as W.Va.’s First Lady of Soul.

Lady D has become well-known for her original one-woman stage play titled, "The Lady and the Empress” and the abbreviated version titled "Bessie's Blues,” based on the life and music of blues legend, Bessie Smith.

Lady D's regularly performs as a duo with keyboard or guitar and she has made many appearances with blues luminaries such as Bruce Katz and Johnny Rawls, but she is best known as front woman for her 4-piece band, MI$$ION. This group of seasoned musicians easily cover several genres that make up their shows. From R&B, blues, jazz and reggae to pop and soul, as well as her own original music, Lady D & MI$$ION hold their own on any musical line-up. Lady D & MI$$ION have been the opening act for soul legends such as the O’Jays and Jagged Edge and performed at the Obama for Change Inaugural Ball in Washington, DC in January 2009.

We’re getting geared up and excited for this annual event! Looking forward to an afternoon of music by @jojo.stockton.3 @fieldsdoris and McFadden & Friends with plenty of treats from @kirksbbq and @nextdoorbakeshop.

We had the terrific pleasure of welcoming members

We had the terrific pleasure of welcoming members of the Blacksburg High School Class of 1964 to our museum on Saturday. Before their visit, we put together a temporary exhibit with items they sent us that pays homage to not only their class, but the legacy of BHS on the whole. Our slideshow also sparked many memories and some really funny and touching stories. Thank you to John Stern for thinking of us and helping to contribute to our future permanent Education in Blacksburg exhibit. You all are a treasure!

We’ve got several activities going on at The Ale

We’ve got several activities going on at The Alexander Black House during Steppin’ Out, so come in, cool off, and see what we have to offer!

Friday and Saturday:
- Museum volunteers will be stationed on our front porch with information about Blacksburg history, our Education Room, and genealogy resources. Stop by and chat!
- The Blacksburg Regional Art Association (BRAA) Theme Show on Controversy in the gallery.
- Blacksburg en Blanc tickets will be on sale in the gift shop!
- We are also selling the last copies of “The New River Valley Through an Artist’s Eye”, a visual tour book created at the Artful Lawyer, A Fine Gallery Inc. in 2017 along with the prints made by Miller off Main St. Galleries. We are very, very happy to have these on hand for you to enjoy.

Saturday:
- 10am - We’re so excited to welcome the BHS Class of 1964 here for their 60th reunion! The house will be open to the public during their morning visit and we’ll be doing a short presentation/discussion of life in Blacksburg during the 50s and 60s. We welcome anyone who wants to come and ask questions!
- 11am - Theatre Games with Eve (see her full schedule above) is a wonderful activity for kids.
- 1-4pm - Kickstart your family research with Genealogy Saturday in our genealogy room upstairs.
