Understanding the Legend of Faust: A Talk with Dr. Christopher Campo-Bowen

Since the 15th century, the legend of Faust has influenced various artistic interpretations over the centuries.
Virginia Tech Associate Professor Dr. Christopher Campo- Bowen will show how the story of a deal with the devil permeates popular culture, especially as seen through different musical and filmic interpretations of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s influential play.

This talk will also prepare you the perfect beginning of spooky season at two historic buildings, both happening the night after Dr. Campo-Bowen’s talk on OCTOBER 1! Gilded with your new cultural knowledge, experience the opening of our annual Art of Goodbye exhibit any time between 5-7pm, meet some very special musicians, grab a cocktail and earn a popcorn voucher to your next event at the Lyric Theatre where Invincible Czars return to the stage to live score and celebrate 100 years of the silent film version of Faust (directed by FW Murnau in 1926).

Dr. Christopher Campo-Bowen is an Associate Professor of Musicology in the School of Performing Arts at Virginia Tech. He completed his Ph.D. in musicology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also holds a B.A. in Music from Stanford University and an M.M. in Orchestral Conducting from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
