SUMMARY:Blues\, Brews & BBQ
DESCRIPTION:The Blacksburg Museum & Cultural Foundation will host its Annual Blues\, Brews\, & BBQ event on Saturday\, September 28\, at the restored St. Luke & Odd Fellows Hall. The Hall – now a nationally recognized historic landmark – once served as the social center of New Town\, a neighborhood for African-American residents during segregation. It houses a museum of African-American history and culture\, and serves as an important reminder of the resilience\, pride\, self-reliance\, and community spirit of the people who lived in New Town\, as well as the legacy of injustice that segregation imposed. The Blues\, Brews\, and BBQ event recalls some of the happier times in New Town\, when friends and neighbors would gather for dancing\, community\, and fellowship. \nBeer & wine\, barbeque\, and sweet treats will be available for purchase from Blue Ridge Beverage\, Kirk’s Famous BBQ\, and Next Door Bake Shop. Additionally\, local chapters of the NAACP and The League of Women Voters will be providing voter registration information. \nAdmission is free\, though a $10 donation is suggested. Seating is limited\, so you may wish to bring chairs. \nEvent Sponsor: Virginia Tech Foundation \nPerformance Schedule \n12:30-1:30pm              The JoJo Stockton Project\n2:00-3:00pm                McFadden and Friends\n3:30-4:30pm                Lady D and Mi$$ion \nMusical Guest Information\nThe JoJo Stockton Project\nThe JoJo Stockton Project contains a back line: killer drummer Chris Oneal\, monster bassist/ lead Nigel Banks\, and fire on Keys\, Mr. Tom Floyd. \nJoJo Stockton (from moonshine capital Franklin County Va.) has opened for several Grammy-nominated artists at venues such as the Harvester Performance Center\, The Cove\, The Taubman\, The Moss Center\, 5 Points Sanctuary and the Bower Center. Corey “lil pop” Ledet\, “TAZ” Brandon Niederauer \, Delbert McClinton\, Adrian Crutchfield\, Cedrick Burnside\, and Rueben Studdard are among the artist he’s performed with or opened for. The list of local artists he’s jammed with is way too long to list. \nIf you can’t find him downtown Roanoke playing the local scene with his popular band “Solacoustix “\, or with a blues jam\, JoJo is out supporting other local artists (his favorite thing to do). For that reason\, he is coined Roanoke’s “Mayor of Music” and actually received the key to the city from the Mayor himself in July 2023. Even though he loves all genres\, coming up playing blues music with his pops (the late Alvin Stockton) this man is committed to keeping the blues alive! \nMcFadden and Friends\nThe McFadden and Friends Band was formed in 2018 and consists of five members with many years of experience playing Jazz\, Blues and R&B. The band has played at Fatback Soul Shack\, Old Salem Brewery\, Parkway Brewery\, Big Lick Brewery\, Twisted Track Brewpub\, Mac And Bob’s Restaurant\, Joe’s Deli\, Homeplace\, Vineyard Music Festival\, Brady’s Distillery\, Eastern Divide Brewery\, and many private events. \nMembers of the Band:\nRoscoe McFadden – Keyboards\, Vocals\, Harmonica\nDavel Burch – Saxophone\nJimmy Dickason – Bass\nDavid Gregory – Drums\nGlen Holmes – Keyboards\nJeff Criner – Guitar (special guest) \nLady D and Mi$$ion\nLady D was born in the coalfields of Cabin Creek in West Virginia and has since become known as W.Va.’s First Lady of Soul. \nLady D has become well-known for her original one-woman stage play titled\, “The Lady and the Empress” and the abbreviated version titled “Bessie’s Blues\,” based on the life and music of blues legend\, Bessie Smith. \nLady D’s regularly performs as a duo with keyboard or guitar and she has made many appearances with blues luminaries such as Bruce Katz and Johnny Rawls\, but she is best known as front woman for her 4-piece  band\, MI$$ION.  This group of seasoned musicians easily cover several genres that make up their shows. From R&B\, blues\, jazz and reggae to pop and soul\, as well as her own original music\, Lady D & MI$$ION hold their own on any musical line-up. Lady D & MI$$ION have been the opening act for soul legends such as the O’Jays and Jagged Edge and performed at the Obama for Change Inaugural Ball in Washington\, DC in January 2009. \nMembers of the Band:\nDan Bailey – Guitar\nPhil Copney – Bass Guitar\nDemetrius “Meech” Cross – Drums\nRobert Gray – Keys \nLady D has six CDs to her credit\, including her newest and most recently released\, “Disturbing My Peace.” \n

SUMMARY:Main Gallery Exhibit: Jesi Pace-Berkeley
DESCRIPTION:Many people recognize Jesi as our community’s preeminent portrait artist. But her artworks span various genres beyond portraiture\, including \, still life\, landscape\, seascape\, floral\, abstract\, and nonobjective.\nFaces & More is a representation of Jesi’s creations and teachings over 53 years. Her collection is so vast and impressive that we are showcasing her retrospective work in two locations. The new Y Community Gallery will exhibit her larger portraits while The Blacksburg Museum & Cultural Foundation gallery at The Alexander Black House will highlight her smaller scale work\, most of which has never been publicly displayed.\nJesi’s passion for art and education over the years has led her to teaching in Montgomery County schools\, leading multi-day Plein Air Watercolor workshops\, and planning enrichment courses overseas in France\, where she guides participants through the composition of stunning scenes from Avignon\, Aix en Provence\, Arles\, Aigues Mortes\, Uzes\, Nime\, and more.\n\nExhibit runs November 30 – February 7\n

SUMMARY:Market Jam at the Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join us in February for the “Reed Tradition String Band” with Russ Boyd on banjo\, Bill Blevins and Chris Via on fiddle\, and Matt Peyton on guitar. This session will honor the Reed Family of Giles County. Henry Reed captured many local fiddle tunes\, and Alan Jabbour recorded his playing for the Archive of Folk Culture at the Library of Congress. His son\, Dean Reed\, attended many of our Market Square Jams. He passed away this summer at age 95 and our old time community misses his playing and singing very much.

SUMMARY:B. Scott Crawford Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED from February 20 to February 25 \nPresentation #1\nThe Selfie: From Stone Age to Digital Age \nThe Digital Revolution has launched an unprecedented communications revolution. Individuals have an ability to now promote themselves at a global level at any time and in a matter of seconds. The selfie has emerged as the latest means for individuals to project images of themselves for public viewing\, but now\, through digital technologies\, in a democratic manner. No longer is portraiture reserved for the wealthy; access to a ubiquitous mobile phone and a free social media account can allow an individual to share self-images with audiences possibly larger many traditional portraits ever reached! This presentation will explore the art behind the preservation of images of individuals\, spanning cave art to Instagram. Through this journey over time\, we may very well find that the selfie is not as much about megalomania as it is about simply magnifying a timeless component of human nature. However\, with the introduction of artificial intelligence\, we will end with a reflection of how AI may\, through training\, be embracing this nature as well! \n  \n\nB. Scott Crawford holds a master’s degree in history from Old Dominion University and has an extensive background in education\, having taught at the high school and college levels\, as well as serving as the social studies coordinator\, K-12\, for a Virginia school division and as the Director of Education for the Museum of Western Virginia and then Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke\, Virginia. Scott currently serves as President & CEO for Virginia 811. He has been with the Notification Center since December 2016\, serving as Director of Operations and then Vice President prior to moving into his current position in July 2020.\n \n\nThis event is free and part of our 2025 Lecture Series which will focus on Blacksburg history\, community\, and culture plus intriguing history and arts topics in general.
