SUMMARY:Speaking Engagement: The Past\, Present\, and Future of Rail in Montgomery County

SUMMARY:Speaking Engagement: Remarkable Trees of Virginia with Jeff Kirwan
DESCRIPTION:Arbor Day is coming soon and in celebration\, we will host Jeff Kirwan on April 9 for a presentation about his beautiful book\, Remarkable Trees of Virginia (reprint coming soon). \n\n\n\nAs The University of Virginia Press states\, “this stunning collaboration between the noted garden writer Nancy Ross Hugo and the photographer Robert Llewellyn showcases the fruits of an effort begun in 2004 to research\, locate\, and photograph Virginia’s most remarkable trees. Four years later\, more than one thousand trees had been officially nominated to the project and many others suggested for possible inclusion. The results\, presented in this elegant\, four-color volume\, are astounding. Hugo and Kirwan\, the project coordinators\, have selected a sample of trees and “tree places” that illustrate the enormous variety\, startling beauty\, and fascinating history of Virginia’s trees”.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening Reception: Making it in America
DESCRIPTION:Southwest Virginia has become a vital place for those seeking safety and a new beginning for decades. In recent years\, our region has welcomed hundreds of neighbors—from Afghan families following the 2021 withdrawal and Ukrainians escaping invasion\, to Latino families who are navigating the complexities of shifting national policies. \nThis project is the culmination of five years of visual journalism and a two-year fellowship with The Secular Society. Through in-depth reporting for The Roanoke Times\, photojournalist Heather Rousseau has sought to document not just the challenges of displacement\, but the resilience of the human spirit. While many newcomers arrive with nothing\, they bring an indomitable determination to contribute and thrive. \nJoin us for an opening reception with the artist and remarks at 6:30pm from Dr. Jose Banuelos Montes\, associate professor at Roanoke College and founder of Casa Latina\, and a few songs from Bob Schmucker\, singer-songwriter and author\, actively involved in numerous civic and community organizations\, including advocacy for the local Ukrainian community.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening Reception: Appalachian Secularization
DESCRIPTION:Opening February 6 with an evening reception and talk with the artist! Jeremy Riffe’s photography exhibition presents both active and abandoned churches\, placing them in visual conversation with one another. Through this juxtaposition\, Riffe offers a reflection on secularization in Appalachia—highlighting churches that remain centers of community alongside those that stand unused\, weathered\, or forgotten. Together\, the photographs explore themes of faith\, memory\, and cultural transition\, documenting how belief and tradition continue to evolve across the Appalachian region.

SUMMARY:Dan Thorp Book Signing & Talk
DESCRIPTION:Virginia Tech History professor Dan Thorp has recently published his latest book entitled Seeking Justice and will join us at St. Luke & Odd Fellows on Wednesday\, November 5 for a book signing and presentation. \nBefore the Civil War brought emancipation to the South\, some enslaved people managed to use the legal system – the same one that had concocted and long perpetuated their bondage – to sue for their freedom from owners who unlawfully held them in slavery. In Seeking Justice\, Thorp tells the story behind Unis v. Charlton’s Administrator\, one of the most extensive of these freedom suits in all of American history. \nDoors open at 5pm and event begins at 5:30pm. Blacksburg Books will join us with copies of the book as well!
