“With These Hands” by Teri Hoover

August 1 - September 10
Alexander Black House & Cultural Center, 204 Draper Road, SW
Blacksburg, VA 24060 United States
+ Google Map

A community project consisting of 230 black and white photographs of hands. Participants are individuals living and working in Blacksburg and the New River Valley. The wide spectrum of participants include teachers, artists, students, musicians, librarians, doctors, scientists, gardeners, advocates and one furry cheer enthusiast. Teri Hoover is sustained and strengthened by insights gathered from being outdoors. A daily walk on the Huckleberry Trail and work in the garden allows for the illumination found in nature. This in turn creates a backdrop that frames and inspires her interest in matters of the heart. As a portrait photographer for 30 years, she sees best with a bit of fresh air. Her photographic portraits allow the sweet range of human emotions unfold and has been one of her greatest joys. A recent return to the drawing and painting of childhood has reinvigorated the richness of her photographic work. A paintbrush in hand allows a new perspective, and a way to revisit life's wonders. Sharing these insights allows connection and balance and a reminder to see with love. The exhibit will be on display from August 1 to September 10. A "Meet the Artist" reception will take place on Thursday, August 9, from 5 to 7 PM.

Donald Sunshine FAIA, Professor Emeritus of Architecture, Virginia Tech, is an award-winning architect, author and artist. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, past president of the Virginia Society American Institute of Architects, and Distinguished Visiting Professor, University of Arizona. In addition to the many buildings he has designed and his seven books, his architecture and art has been widely exhibited. Prior exhibits include Chicago’s Art Institute and the Museum of Science and Industry, as well as exhibits in Virginia, Florida, and Hawaii. Professor Sunshine and his artist and collaborator wife Joanna live on their family farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and in the 10,000 Islands area of Southwest Florida, where they continue to pursue architecture, art, and writing. "As a young student – about 1000 years ago – I began drawing. Perhaps it was my grandfather, an artist who didn’t know it, who first introduced me to art. I consider my art a 'way of life' and a means of seeing. Shunning photo realism . . . after all we do have cameras these days, my impressionist watercolors, primarily of Southwest Virginia, present my way of 'seeing.' My abstracts provide another way of 'seeing,' and finally, are my paintings of art as commentary. I share my artist wife Joanna’s passion for search and discovery. My architecture, sketching, painting, sculpture and writing are interrelated and a life’s pursuit, as well as a way of seeing, and a means of commentary." - Donald Sunshine
